Cleaning Your Home’s Windows — The Right Way

cleaning windowsLooking for a way to keep your windows looking amazing for years to come? You’ve come to the right place. Window cleaning is a mindless task, right? Spray some Windex and wipe in a circular motion with a paper towel or piece newspaper? This works in most cases but these are your home’s gorgeous windows that you want to keep looking pristine for several years. At Trim Team, we know all about caring for windows. And when we install new windows in your home, it’s our goal to ensure they remain in brand new condition as long as possible.

Follow these tips to care for your home’s windows:

First, the Best Cleaning Solution

It doesn’t hurt to have your windows cleaned professionally especially if you have ceiling-high windows that require a ladder, but if you’re a true do-it-yourself, then make sure you have the right cleaning solution. Be sure to keep this recipe jotted down somewhere:

  • Mix one cup of white vinegar with 10 cups of water.
  • Pour the solution inside a spray bottle and store the excesses in a jug for future use.

Next, the Best Cleaning Method

Now that you have your cleaning solution ready to go, it’s time to put it to use. Using a soft lint-free towel or one that is specifically made for windows, spray the solution onto the towel and wipe in a circular motion while avoiding touching the other areas of the window such as the frame and screen, if it has one. If there are stubborn materials that just won’t come off, DO NOT use a razor blade! This is a common mistake that results in permanent scratches. Instead, have a professional clean it.

What About Those Other Areas of the Windows?

Cleaning the blinds or shades is also an integral part of keeping your windows cleaned. At least every two weeks, be sure to dust the blinds and use a soft brush to clean off any debris that may have come in from the outside. Wet a brush with some warm water and mild detergent and scrub gently on the blinds/shades. Then use a cloth to wipe away any smudges. If your blinds are made of fabric, you can use a vacuum cleaner brush to remove all of the hard-to-reach dirt.

Caring For Your Windows Will Extend Their Lifetime

Small maintenance can go a long way. If you find it difficult to make time to clean your home’s windows, you may want to consider hiring a professional to do the job. These services are often much more affordable than you may think and will make a visible difference on your entire home. But when the times comes where cleaning just isn’t cutting it anymore, consider installing new windows.
